As readers of this blog will know, one of my goal’s is to lead a more minimalist, or simpler, lifestyle. To have a lighter, less cluttered living space….instead of being surrounded with things that I don’t love, need or enjoy. I want to have a space that enables me to focus on the things that are important to me, like family and spending time outdoors.
Well…that’s the dream!
To be honest, it’s something that I’m still working on, and I know it’s not going to happen overnight….
When I need a little motivation or inspiration, I like to dive into one of my favourite reads on minimalism such as The Joy of Less by Francine Jay or Goodbye, things by Fumio Sasaki. I also love reading inspirational quotes, and these are some of my favourites:
“A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin;
what else does a man need to be happy?”
~ Albert Einstein.
“I want to live simply. I want to sit by the window when it rains and read books I’ll never be tested on. I want to paint because I want to, not because I’ve got something to prove. I want to listen to my body, fall asleep when the moon is high and wake up slowly, with no place to rush off to. I want not to be governed by money or clocks or any of the artificial restraints that humanity imposes on itself. I just want to be, boundless and infinite.”
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
~ William Morris
like a child blows a dandelion.
In one breath,
an exquisite lightness
and immeasurable joy.”
~ Francine Joy
“I have rooted myself into this quiet place where I don’t need much to get by. I need my visions. I need my books. I need new thoughts and lessons, from older souls, bars, whisky, libraries; different ones in different towns. I need my music. I need my songs. I need the safety of somewhere to rest my head at night, when my eyes get heavy. And I need space. Lots of space. To run, and sing, and change around in any way I please—outer or inner—and I need to love. I need the space to love ideas and thoughts; creations and people—anywhere I can find—and I need the peace of mind to understand it.”
“I would rather own little and see the world, than own the world and see little of it” ~Alexander Sattler.
“Forget about the money for a moment. Lose yourself in the wilderness, listen to the music of the softly blowing winds, feel the rain on your bare skin, let the mountains take the burden off your shoulders.”
“Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning sun can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day – like writing a poem, or saying a prayer.”
~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh
“To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter… to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird’s nest or a wildflower in spring — these are some of the rewards of the simple life.”
~ John Burroughs
These are just a few of my favourite quotes, that I enjoy returning to and re-reading. I hope you like them; do you have a favourite? I’d love to hear about quotes that inspire you in the comments section below.
