This week has been hectic in our home – hectic in a good way. From pumpkin picking and carving, to trick and treating, and school parties (read: being a taxi driver); we don’t seem to have stopped. Not to mention the usual work and chores! It’s all led me to look forward to the weekend and to think about some of the simple pleasures in life. To look forward to slowing down a little and taking it easy for a day or two. These are some of the simple things that make me smile. I also asked fellow bloggers what would be on their list…I wonder what would be on yours?

  • Sitting by the lake side, enjoying the view (Crummock Water – left). The enormity of nature making us realise how small we – and our problems – are.
  • Eating breakfast in the garden on a warm morning.
  • Laughing so much, that you just can’t stop.
  • Enjoying a home-cooked meal.
  • “Going for a walk in the countryside behind our home. A 5 minute walk and we are up a hill looking down on the view over the houses and fields. Great for calming the mind and it’s free.” – Victoria
  • Waking up on your day off and realising you don’t have to get up.
  • A line full of washing on a fine, blustery day.
  • Hanging out with people who make you forget about your phone.
  • Forest bathing – walking through the woodlands, breathing in the fragrant air. Forgetting about your worries.
  • Getting lost in a good book.
  • “My dressing gown. It’s so snuggly!” – Jennie.
  • A freshly brewed cup of coffee, first thing in the morning, whilst the rest of the family are still sleeping.
  • “Music! For me it can take me back to events or times in my life and make me feel nostalgic or it can really lift my spirit when I’m in a MEH kind of mood.” – Ally.
  • Watching the rain beat down on the window pane and listening to the thunder. All the while being safely tucked up indoors.
  • Collapsing into bed after a long day and smelling/feeling the freshly laundered bedding.
  • A good conversation with a friend.
  • Snuggling up with your cat.
  • Watching your child sleep.
  • “Treating myself to my favourite chocolate. I sit down somewhere peaceful and really savour eating it without any distractions. ” – Debbie
  • “Watching the sun set in the winter whilst holding a cup of hot chocolate.” – Christy.
  • “Sitting by the sea, listening to the waves breaking on the shore. It doesn’t matter if I’m in Wales, Devon or Blackpool – if I close my eyes, I could be anywhere in the world!” – Kelly

I’d love to hear how you slow things down a little, and some of the simple pleasures in your life. Please comment below. Perhaps you enjoy some of the things above or maybe you have some other tips that you an share with us.

  1. My favourite way of slowing down is a combination of two of things – around 10pm, I love to spend an hour sitting in bed reading until bedtime around 11. Almost without fail, my cat Daisy (who isn’t a natural lap cat) comes with me and curls up against me, purring away. Thanks for this list – just reading through it was somehow really calming…!

    • Hi Elaine, thank you for your lovely comment 🙂 Your night time routine sounds so relaxing, what a perfect way to end the day.

  2. Music is a big one for me, there is something about the power of nostalgia. There was a good article about nostalgia in the Health & Beauty magazine that Boots give out free to Advantage cardholders this month. All very true if you do manage to slow down at the weekend. If you can take time to watch your kids laugh or savour the moment of something it’s great, something I need to get a lot better at.

  3. Some great ideas and reminders of the small things. I love the sound of rain when I’m indoors; I miss the conservatory we had at our old house as I liked nothing better than being in there on a cold day with a hot chocolate, blanket, and listening to the rain hit the glass. x

  4. That lake looks beautiful. For me I love to read a good fantasy book in bed. But the problem is I don’t want to put it down and end up staying up way too late!

  5. I love pottering about and doing jobs in my parents garden. As I don’t have any outside space at home in London, I really appreciate the time I spend there.

  6. Lovely post. I enjoy walking in nature, driving in a beautiful area, visiting friends, reading, music, and sometimes, that wonderful thing called a nap revives me. #MMBC

  7. Hi Rachel, these are great. It is the simple pleasures in life that are the most pleasurable. That first coffee of the day before the family wakes up and walking the dogs up the hills or on the beach, listening to the sound of nature are my simple pleasures.

Thank you for linking up with the #MMBC.

  8. A lovely reminder of the small pleasures in life and how important they are. I enjoy many of the things listed above, including the sound of rain at night. I even use an app on my phone now to reproduce this when it’s not raining – cheating a bit, I know! Another simple pleasure is sitting down for afternoon tea with a slice of cake (preferably home-made) and watching a TV quiz show such as The Chase.
